Cosmetology

 

The Cosmetology program is designed to train students to learn a variety of services related to the care and beautification of the hair, complexion, and hands. Upon completion of hours of training and passing both theory and practical State Board exams, students will be granted licensure into the workforce. Instruction includes training on shampooing, manicuring, rinses and scalp treatments, hair styling, setting, coloring, tinting, and lightening, chemical services, permanent waving, facials, and massaging. Students are also taught salesmanship, trade mathematics, bacteriology, anatomy, hygiene, sanitation, salon management, and customer relations. This program is design to prepare students for the State Board Licensing examination. The Pennsylvania requirement for licensure is 1250 hours of training. Hourly requirements include: professional image, bacteriology, decontamination, properties of hair and scalp, draping, shampooing and conditioning, hair cutting, artistry of hairstyling, wet hairstyles, thermal hairstyling, permanent waving, hair coloring, chemical hair relaxing, soft curl permanent, thermal hair straightening, artistry of artificial hair, manicuring and pedicuring, nail and disorders, theory of massage, facials and make-up, skin and scalp disorders, removing unwanted hair, cells, anatomy, physiology, electricity, light therapy, chemistry, salon business, and state laws. Upon completion of the 1250 hours of training, students are prepared to take the State Board Examination, which is required for licensing. All programs at the Career Technology Center are three years in length. Students will spend one half-day at the Career Technology Center and the other half-day at their sending school.

You will need

  • cosmetology smock
  • a kit which includes combs, brushes, curling iron, scissors, rollers, and other cosmetology supplies for the cost of approximately $500.00

Nature of the Program:  Cosmetologists work in clean pleasant surroundings with good lighting and ventilation. Most full-time cosmetologists work 40 hours a week but longer hours are common especially if you are self-employed. Work schedules usually include evenings, weekends, and holidays to accommodate the customer base. Workers are on their feet for the majority of their shift and they can be exposed to hair and nail chemicals. Some of the responsibilities of a cosmetologist would be: cuts, trims, and shapes hair or hairpieces using clippers, scissors, trimmers or razors; shampoos, rinses, and dries hair and scalp or hairpieces with water, liquid, soap or other solutions; bleaches, dyes, or tints using applicator brush; applies water, setting or waving solutions to hair and winds hair on curlers or rollers; combs, brushes, and sprays hair or wigs to set style; attaches wig or hairpiece to model head and dresses wigs and hairpieces according to instructions, samples, sketches, or photographs; analyzes patron’s hair and other physical features or reads make-up instructions to determine and recommend beauty treatment; massages and treats scalp for hygienic and remedial purposes using hands, fingers, or vibrating equipment; administers therapeutic medication and advises patron to seek medical treatment for chronic or contagious scalp conditions; and recommends and applies cosmetics, lotions, and creams to soften and lubricate skin and enhance and restore natural appearance.  

 

 

Completion of the Program:  Upon completion of the cosmetology program, students should have the qualifications to take the State Board Examination, which is required for licensing. Students will complete a set of State Board tasks. They must complete these tasks at an average level to be qualified for the State Board Examinations. They must pass both portions of the State Board Examination (practical and theory) to be licensed.
