Nature of the Program:  Plumbers, pipe fitters, and steamfitters usually work alone. They generally work a standard 40-hour workweek but those who provide maintenance service or are under contract may have to work evening or weekend shifts. These workers spend a good amount of time traveling from one job site to the next. To work in this profession, good physical stamina is needed because they must frequently lift heavy piping, work in cramped and uncomfortable positions, and stand for extended periods of time.  Plumbers, pipe fitters, and steamfitters sometimes work outside in inclement weather. Safety in this profession is critical to avoid work related accidents such as burns from hot pipes or soldering equipment, cuts from sharp tools, or falls from ladders.

Completion of the Program:  Upon completion of the plumbing and heating program, students should have the qualifications to start a career as a plumber, pipe fitter, or steamfitter apprentice. Job opportunities are always rising due to the increase in construction activity as well as the need for repairs in existing buildings. After meeting the requirements, students may also apply for entrance into an apprenticeship program or at a post secondary program.

Related Occupations: Plumber, pipe fitter, steamfitter, gas fitter, heating installer/technician, or heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanic and installer.
